In the Volume 5 finale it felt like everything good about his character was tossed out the window and while I’m still not crazy about his over-simplified backstory and how he handled Ozpin back there, it’s clear he’s not just a simple brute with a revenge complex.
Deep down Hazel IS a good person. He doesn’t want people getting hurt when they don’t need to and is reluctant to fight because he’d rather settle things peacefully. In most cases it makes him one of the nicest villains in Salem’s inner circle. We see him helping a child he’s never met get a ticket at the train station, keeping composed in front of Sienna Khan even as she speaks to him with utter hostility, mourn her death and show contempt for Adam when he kills her needlessly, show reluctance to fight Ren and Nora and only hold them back from the door when he does, and most recently take full blame for the group’s failure even as Salem has him in a death grip.
He has an incredibly strong sense of justice and will only resort to violence when he has to. Most of the time.
BUT
That sense of justice becomes warped and twisted whenever Ozpin is concerned, because he sees what happened to Gretchen as Ozpin’s fault. Gretchen died and there’s no way to bring her back, however, Ozpin cannot die, at least not permanently. So Hazel believes there is no justice to be had for his sister, but he’ll keep fighting to attain that justice by killing Ozpin again and again and again to avenge her life. It doesn’t matter to him if others get in the way, if he’s killing another each time he kills Ozpin, if children are among his casualties. Because he has decided this is how justice must be met, he has decided those deaths are on Ozpin, and not him, and doesn’t restrain himself from doing exactly what he hated Ozpin for doing.
I’ll bet Salem uses that against him. If she needs Hazel to go out and kill Huntsmen, she reminds him these are people tricked into an early grave by Ozpin, that their deaths are because of Ozpin, not Hazel, and uses that warped sense of justice to her advantage.
It’s a shame too, because if it weren’t for being so blinded by his own need for revenge, Hazel truly would be a good man.
mermaids would have to be dark-skinned and chubby to survive in the ocean
water isnt a great means of protecting oneself from the sun theyd have to be very dark if they were shallow mermaids and they didnt want to be constantly sunburnt and they may be paler if they lived deeper in the water but theyd have to be buff and/or chubby as hell to resist the water pressure and cold of the deep sea

Fat isn’t a defense against water pressure, it’s an insulator. So the colder the water, the fatter the mermaid.
Scandinavian merfolk would be tubby, evolving more for persistence hunting in the freezing coastal waters, possibly relying more on siren-song to lull prey into effective range. The less moving the better! Gotta keep the chub on to survive the winter.
Whereas Mediterranean/Polynesian merfolk would spend their time among the fertile reefs in warmer waters, competing with other predators. They would be built for speed and agility, buff like sprinters. Darker skin would be harder to spot under the surf, and more resistant to the glaring sun.
Also: it’s not hair, it’s scillia that they use to filter plankton out of the water, and it stings like a jellyfish if you touch it.
I would imagine that merfolk come in many different colors, maybe they even have the ability to shift their skin tone to assist in hunting? I guess that depends on how intelligent your mermaids are.
Tldr; cold water mermaids would probably be chubby, warm water mermaids would look like Serna Williams.
Another thing to take into account is Deep-Sea-Gigantism. It’s not fully understood why many animal species such as the colossal squid and whales typically grow to unimaginable sizes in high-water-pressure areas, but it’s assumed that it develops as some sort of defense mechanism. This would imply that deep-sea merfolk would be a sort of Leviathan-class eldritch horror.
Shout out to Hazel who was full on ready to take the blame and punishment for what happened at Haven Academy and not immediately blaming Cinder or any of the kids for what happened. Like even when Salem flipped the fucking table he was ready to continue to stand by what he said, saying “I don’t-” before being cut off by her.
The weird thing about falling down the golden oldies hole is finding a great song, and then discovering that actually, it’s the toothless cover by white artists of a song that was performed much better by the original black artists. This seems to have been, like, common practice?? Were black people not allowed to have a hit unless the whites ritualistically desecrated it on the radio, jfk
I think the most dreadful example of this I found was Rum and Coca-Cola, which was in its original form a commentary on the sex tourism that American soldiers engaged in when they visited Trinidad.

Western Europe’s weird “we all learned our lesson after 1945 and now we’re all nice progressives who don’t do icky things like racism and sexism anymore 😇” superiority complex is straight up one of the biggest enablers of the rise of the militant far right here
