Hair bias is a real problem. Itâs rarely talked about, but it affects millions globally.
This World Afro Day, weâre calling time on this.
Whatever your hair type, join the movement to Change the Facts, Not the Fro. In celebrating our Afro hair this weekend in all of its versatility, help us continue the conversation by tagging us in your pics @worldafroday.
Me loving Laverne Cox and thinking sheâs beautiful or wanting to be an influential speaker like her one day does not magically cure me of my transmisogyny. Wishing that Amiyah Scott would be my wife/personal stylist does not magically cure me of my transmisogyny. Screeching like the fangirl that I am when Janet Mock oh so casually spills tea on Twitter does not cure me of transmisogyny. And that goes for every other cis person out there too. Letâs not act like captioning a pic of Laverne with âYAAAAAAAAAAAAASâ means that we will never again have to be self-reflective and examine the ways in which we may contribute to large scale transmisogyny.
Also like not being transmysoginist is a praxis. Itâs something you have to constantly learn and adjust as our society is prone to finding new ways of discrimination and microagressions.
Despite all the law enforcement resources expended, empirical research on the dangers or benefits of erotic services ads has been sparse. But a new study provides strong evidence that when law enforcement closes down sites like Craigslist or Redbook, women die. Â
The September 2017 study, authored by West Virginia University and Baylor University economics and information systems experts, analyzes rates of female homicides in various cities before and after Craigslist opened an erotic services section on its website. The authors found a shocking 17 percent decrease in homicides with female victims after Craigslist erotic services were introduced.
The data does not provide a single clear explanation as to why female homicide rates drop so steeply, Scott Cunningham, one of the paperâs authors, told ThinkProgress. Itâs possible, for example, that when Craigslist opens erotic services ads, some women in abusive domestic situations decide to become sex workers, move out, and so escape violent homicide at the hands of their spouses or boyfriends.
The most likely explanation, though, Cunningham says, is that sex workers simply make up a huge percentage of female homicide victims. When sex workers are safer, female homicide rates drop significantly.

Once sex workers move indoors, they are much safer for a number of reasons, Cunningham said. When youâre indoors, âyou can screen your clients more efficiently. When youâre soliciting a client on the street, there is no real screening opportunity. The sex worker just has to make the split second decision. She relies on very limited and complete information about the clientâs identity and purposes. Whereas when a sex worker solicits indoors through digital means, she has Google, she has a lot of correspondence, she can ask a lot of questions. Itâs not perfect screening, but itâs better.â

In theory, closing down advertising is supposed to reduce exploitation of women. In practice, when resources are taken away from people living on the edge of poverty, they have fewer options and are less able to protect themselves.
For all these reasons access to the Internet can transform the experience of sex work. Young women who have been able to screen clients using sites like Craigslist, âalmost feel like this is a safe job because they have these tools,â DiAngelo said.
Sex workers report that free online advertising makes them safer. There is now data showing that erotic services ads significantly decrease female homicide rates. So, will law enforcement back down and allow these sites to operate again?

Seriously though, I loveâŚloveâŚthe tallgrass prairie, and its near destruction pains me deeply. Partly because I can still sense the land mourning the destruction, I think.Â
If I ever came into a great deal of money, I would sink a great deal of it into buying as much land as I could and restoring native prairie on it.Â
Iâve done a little of itâŚwhat I canâŚon my little part of it, but thatâs just a suburban plot.Â
If everyone in the Midwest, though, did the sameâŚthink of how much of that land could be restored to what it should be.Â
If you live in the former tallgrass prairie range and wish to do this, hit me up. I can point you to sources for native plants, seed, and information on how to return your part of the world to native vegetation.Â
I donât âown landâ (yet) but someday I hope to do this as well!! I grew up in Minnesota on the border of prairie and forests and itâs heartbreaking seeing it destroyed – even over my short, twenty-ish years alive
The Tallgrass Prairie is the single most endangered ecosystem on earth.Â
Something like 98% of it is gone.Â
The problem was that the roots of those tall prairie plantsâŚsome of which go down six or more feetâŚbuilt some of the richest and thickest loam on the planet over the ten thousand or so years since the glaciers receded.Â
It makes excellent farmland. And that resource was exploited, ruthlessly, and continues to be.Â
And not even to feed humans. The corn grown here is processed into corn syrup, ethanol for fuel, animal feed, and industrial corn starch. And all farmers grow here is corn or soybeans. Their equipment is too specialized for anything else. And they maintain those cropsâŚthe same monocultures, year after year after decadeâŚby soaking the ground in herbicide (which requires, of course, crops bred specially to resist it) and pesticide (which kills all bugs, indiscriminately) and fungicide (which kills good soil fungi as well).Â
Corn sucks nitrogen out of the soil like a fiend. So, of course, to replenish the soil, rather than letting a field lie fallow or rotating crops, you must dump fertilizer on it. This is usually anhydrous ammonia, which causes a lot of health problems in farmers who are habitually exposed to it.Â
I could rant for the next twenty years about how the current farming system is badly broken.Â
Itâs farmers that need bailout packages and reforms, not banks

As many of you have heard by now, Kroger has increased my hours to 30+ per week due to being understaffed, and it has been that way for months. But those extra ten hours have been hacking away at time Iâd have usually spent working on Women of Xalâs script. This is definitely not a situation where I NEED income to survive or handle medical expenses. This is to get me back on track with my game and mitigate the time lost from a fluctuating retail schedule. The moment I reach $4000 in commissions, I can give my two weeksâ notice and fully commit. (Thatâs basically the base cost of how much I cost per year. ) Feel free to reblog this to any ambitious project developer!
And for the rest of you, hereâs a still image of the animated Xuna wallpaper backers and Patrons received a few weeks back!
me: haha oh god this is so bad im making so many unsupported claims and pulling all this analysis out of my ass
my prof in the margins: excellent analysis!
me:Â
when i was in high school i used to write my papers thinking wow iâm just bullshitting all of this. then like a week before my senior year ended after all the grades were set, i was talking to my english teacher and told him you know i just bullshitted every paper i wrote. he told me that while i may have thought i was just pulling it all out of my ass, i genuinely knew what i was talking about and made well-supported analyses. i only thought i was bullshitting because it didnât take much effort and it all seemed obvious to me. if you do well on your essays even though you think youâre just making it up as you go, chances are youâre not pulling it out of your ass. youâre just a genuinely talented analyst, even if the analysis that youâre making comes from a subconscious understanding of the material rather than a conscious effort to study it. give yourself some credit.Â
