Full time work should entitle someone to enough pay for rent, food, bills, and leisure activities. Full time work for a full life wage. You put in your 8 hours a day, 5 days a week? You should be able to afford the basic shit you need in life, no matter where you work.
pisses me off that this is considered a radical statement.
During a conversation with my manager this morning, she mentioned that her manager– the district manager– had told her that “We want people who are passionate about our products. We don’t want people working here if they’re doing it for the money.”
To which the manager (internally, because she doesn’t want to be fired), went “you’ve got to be fucking shitting me.”
Here’s the thing: it is totally possible to do a job for the passion and not be obsessively thinking about the money every minute of every day. In fact, there have been economic studies regarding that very thing.
You know when it starts?
When the employee in question is making $50-75k per year.*
That’s the starting point of financial security. That’s the point when you’re fairly secure that you’re going to have rent, food, and basic living expenses covered.
I’ve worked a lot of jobs over the years. A lot.
I saw the same working as a freelancer– when I charged lower rates, my clients treated me like shit and acted like they were doing me a favor; when I charged more, they respected me as a professional. A newspaper that started out paying me above market wage also treated me very kindly, because they started with the assumption that I was a human being who needs to eat.
In my experience, the employers that insist that your job be your “passion” are also the ones that pay you nothing and treat you like garbage. It’s exactly like abusive people, who tell you that you would put up with their abuse if you “loved them enough”. It’s a way of convincing the victim that they’re responsible for their own mistreatment, which is absolutely fucked up.
Here’s my advice to you:
It is absolutely okay to take a job that doesn’t pay you what you deserve– you’ve got to eat, after all. But don’t think for a second that you have a responsibility to that job. If you see something available that pays better and treats you better, take it and don’t look back. Don’t waste an ounce of sympathy for employers who try to convince you that passion is an acceptable substitute for survival.
some of yall dont realize that one bad costume design can break someones career like do yall not understand that jacqueline durran can possibly never be employed again because of that dress?
An OSCAR WINNING Costume Designer! Working for nearly TWO DECADES! Could have her career ruined by fucking Hermione Granger! And that’s feminist! Emma Watson exercised her “feminism” by literally taking over another woman’s job.
the best experience working in customer service that i ever had was when i worked at building 19 and they were going out of business. they got to a point where all sales were final and this rude asshole came in throwing a fit bc she couldn’t return some 25$ thing, and i was just in a state of total don’t-give-a-fuck and so was the store manager so i’m talking complete immunity to do and say whatever i wanted. so i told this lady i’d be more willing to help her if she’d drop the attitude and quit being so rude to me and she looked so -shocked-. then she started ranting about losing out on 25$ and i was like “i’m sorry you’re out 25 dollars but next week i’ll be out of a job, so i don’t actually care,” and the look on her face allowed me to ascend to a higher plane of existence. and that was my favorite day of work ever.
cashier: sorry for your wait. we’re short-staffed today
millennial: oh that’s ok no worries 🙂
baby boomer:
But listen that’s the thing.
We are short staffed almost 97% of the time at my retail job. Because corporate has figured out you can overwork 4 people at minimum wage instead of paying for the 8 people you should probably have to be on the clock.
Baby boomers grew up with stores that were adequately staffed, with workers who most likely had weeks of training for their jobs as opposed to the 1-2 shadow shift training we get now. Also those workers most likely were able to be full time if they wanted. Now retail, except for management positions, is mostly made up of part time workers, because you don’t have to give them benefits. So you have a workforce of perpetually underpaid, overwhelmed, undertrained people trying to do their best all while dealing with an entire generation of people who refuse to acknowledge that the system has changed and the average retail worker has NO control over that change and is being taken advantage of.
Like we got our customer surveys back, and almost every single one mentioned that they couldn’t find someone to help them or we needed more people on register because it was TOO SLOW, but what did management tell us instead of scheduling more people? We need to be quicker on register and call for backup if necessary. Which makes no sense because we can’t call for backup THAT ISN’T THERE.
If there’s anything I can finesse, it’s a resume, interview and pay rate.
Please help? I need these skills?
Come my child…
LIE. LIE. LIE. (By lie, I mean embellish) I’m going to tell you why. I lied on my resume to get the job that made it so I didn’t have to embellish anymore. By embellish I mean make your positions seem more important than they are. Chances are you’re not getting paid enough for what you do anyhow. The system is definitely going to play you so you gotta make a move too.
Use businesses that are no longer in business (Finesse #1) Everyone has those establishments in their cities that went out of business; Fridays, hospitals, dennys, etc. USE THEM. I’m a HR Manager, I’m not going to dig for a reference from a closed business. Not in this lifetime.
Use your friends who are employed in corporate America as references. (Finesse #2) List them as former supervisors or managers. Pick your friends with professional phone voices who can gas you up in a corporate manner.
Research the pay rate for the company, city and position. (Finesse #3) They may be offering you 25K to be a store manager when in reality store managers in your exact city (or their employment averages) are making 35K. Do not be afraid to challenge a salary. It shows that you also did your homework on the position and the company.
Chaotic good.

@ White people replying instead of reblogging, you know better because no one asked y’all asses. Nobody is going to put they graduated from medical school to go from cashiering to OBGYNing. Bye. This goes to you with your raggedy ass blog @randomfandomgrad Nobody asked you. Shut the fuck up.
I got my first marketing job by tactfully lying out of my ass about how much I knew about photoshop, learned myself photoshop on the job, and got three clients after because my boss recommended me out herself.
Nobody wants to believe folks of color especially about their credentials and esp when it comes to black folks. All of these ppl talking about how a lie can be spotted on a CV. Fuck off. Y’all can’t spot the truth anyway either
Follow the advice above. Do whatever you need to do. Get that job. Prosper.

I needed this. I am newly unemployed. Aannnnd I used to work for a business that no longer exists
Just to add Coursera offers free courses in stuff like data science and human resources subjects and all sorts of stuff. The classes can be listed under education on a resume.
Casual reminder that working off the clock is illegal. Unless you’re salaried or authorized for overtime there is no reason for you to stay late. None. Your employers know this, too.
That’s the thing: it’s literally just a job to us. We’re getting paid for our jobs. We’re not getting paid to pretend we’re over the moon about the work itself. That’s honestly nonsense. If you love your job, great. But even if you do, you should still get paid for exactly however long you worked.
not to mention that, in many jobs, working overtime is unpaid, and many of us *literally cannot afford to stay* either because they have a second job to get to or other necessary obligation.
A few helpful sentences in cases where people wanna get up your ass about this:
“I have met all my deadlines. If there comes a point when I am not meeting my deadlines, we can discuss my work habits.”
“Can you tell me what it is about my work that you think requires spending extra time at work?”
“I have no issue staying late if there’s an emergency or coming in early for a meeting if necessary, but otherwise, I am going to do my work well and go home on time.”
From experience, I can tell you middle-aged white men do not like hearing this, especially from women, so prepare for some blowback but stand your ground.
In addition to all of the previous commentary, I wish we could do away with this idea that there’s something wrong with a job just being a job. The vast majority of people are working because they need money to live on, not because their heart and soul sing to the tune of their job. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Do the work you’ve committed to do, and then go enjoy your life. And guess what? Enjoying your life is the important part.
This is disgustingly ableist. Disabled people have worth, their labor has value, they’re working just like everyone else so they should get paid as much as everyone else. Why are we debating this??? It’s common sense!
